Alopecia Hair Loss FAQ's:

What is alopecia?

Alopecia is a medical condition causing head hair loss, and in some cases body hair. It is sometimes called ‘spot balding’ when there is patchy balding on the head. Bald areas can vary from small patches to the entire body. Male pattern baldness is technically a form of alopecia.

What causes alopecia?

There is no known single cause for alopecia hair loss. Some medications (e.g. cancer chemotherapy drugs) can predispose a person to alopecia. Contributing causes are numerous and include:

  • hormonal imbalances (e.g. through pregnancy or menopause)
  • thyroid disorders
  • diabetes
  • lupus
  • anaemia
  • syphilis
  • extreme stress

Alopecia case study

Twin sisters Caitlin and Courtney have had alopecia since age 12.

Caitlin and Courtney each chose a custom-designed wig with beautiful long human hair from Wigs by Haircreations. They have been wearing their custom made wigs during high school and participate fully in school life, maintaining a very active lifestyle. They like running and playing netball with their new hair as it feels totally secure and comfortable. The photo showing short hair is of an Ellen Wille synthetic wig that’s easy to wear — just shake and go! The long hair wig is a custom made human hair wig made specifically for Caitlin and Courtney.

Can alopecia be cured?

It depends on your individual case. Your dermatologist or GP can advise. Sometimes time heals alopecia. Beware of dodgy claims of a cure though – if there was a product on the market that really worked, no one would be bald!

How long does alopecia last?

Alopecia is treated by following the advice of your specialist or dermatologist. Each case is unique, but with lifestyle changes, special management and time, the healing process can be put in motion towards possible recovery.

What can I do about bald patches from alopecia?

Topical products have no scientific backing, so beware of claims to the contrary. The stress of trying to hide bald patches often aggravates the condition, so stress management can help.

Am I entitled to a medical grant?

Depending on the cause of your alopecia, you may be eligible for funding from the Ministry of Health or ACC for buying replacement hair. We can handle the paperwork for your grant personally at your request. See our Medical grants page for more information.
