If you’re experiencing hair loss due to medical reasons like cancer treatment, alopecia, or other conditions, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Wigs and Hairpieces Service Payment. This subsidy helps reduce the cost of purchasing and maintaining wigs, hairpieces, and headwear.
As an Approved Wig Provider, we supply quality hair products and wig consultation services, and help with the administration of your subsidy. We also have a variety of synthetic wigs that match the amount of the subsidy, so there’s no extra cost to you (detailed below).

How it works
You must be a New Zealand citizen or resident and have a medical certificate from your specialist or GP detailing your hair loss condition (whether permanent or temporary).
Book an appointment with your nearest Wig Consultant (we have over 20 throughout NZ) for a free, private consultation to discuss your needs and select your wig, hairpiece, or headwear. We provide premium human hair wigs that you can put your subsidy amount towards, and a variety of synthetic wig options that match the Ministry of Health Subsidy amount, meaning there’s no additional cost to you (below).

Subsidy Entitlement Amounts
The entitlement period begins with your first purchase.
- Adults over 18 with temporary hair loss (eg. Chemotherapy): $408.88 annually
You can claim all part of your entitlement at any time within 1 year. Synthetic wigs are the most popular choice for clients with temporary hair loss, and most of our synthetic wigs are priced within this value. - Adults over 18 with permanent hair loss (eg. Alopecia): $2330.66 over 9 years
You can claim all or part of your entitlement at any time within 9 years. Human hair wigs are the most popular choice for clients with permanent hair loss. - Children under 18 with temporary or permanent hair loss: $1226.65 over 3 years or until they turn 18
If you are under 18, your entitlement is the same regardless of whether hair loss is temporary or permanent. You can claim all or part of your entitlement at any time within the 3-year period. - ACC covers hair loss caused by accidents and burns, and we are an Approved Wig Provider for ACC. We see many clients with scalp scar tissue that precludes hair growth. When full hair loss exists, a full prosthetic wig must be designed. In that case, we quote directly to ACC.

Claim Process
Your local Wig Consultant can handle the paperwork for you, free of charge, by applying for the subsidy on your behalf. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can purchase your wig online on our website and make the claim yourself to the Ministry of Health to receive your subsidy. Just email us at info@wigs.co.nz to receive the form and instructions to claim your subsidy.
